White's Weird World: Mike White's Year of the Dog

This is one of those films I knew nothing about, so I didn't really know what I was in store for. I knew it was by Mike White, who has an unusual imagination, and who I'll never forget after watching Chuck & Buck - a film I also liked and was unnerved by. Year of the Dog reminded me of C&B in it's initial simplicity, the strange unfolding of the characters and the nearly manic and discomforting shifts in the story. Every way I thought this film would go at moments, it didn't, which was refreshing, though no less unnerving at times.

Molly Shannon is great in this film. I'm not an SNL fan, so I've never seen much of her work, but she played this character brilliantly. Her expressions that go with the subtle, and not so subtle, shifts in her personality were spot on. She was so disconnected at times that it pushed me away and drew me in all at once. White creates interesting characters who we feel compassion for while also feeling repulsed by at the same time.

Be forewarned, this is not a straightforward comedy and it can be pretty dark at times. It is a rewarding film though and it is definitely worth a look, if you want something out of the ordinary. Don't let the detractors scare you into thinking this is an animal rights film, because it isn't. It's a film about understanding what you love, seeking it out and standing by it, no matter how crazy it, or you, may seem to everyone else.
